Born and raised in Britain until the age of seven, to an art dealer father, and ex actress mother. With legal dual British / American nationality, but famous the world over. Elizabeth Taylor.
It was said by Barry Norman, that during her first mariage to Richard Burton, it would have been impossible to show her photo to any one thousand random people from all walks of life, without every one of them knowing who she was.
To a degree, I can believe that. There would, of course, have been exceptions, but I can believe that she was about as famous as it’s possible to get. Years ago before her health failed her, I knew a man who was her driver whenever she was in the UK, and he described her as being down to earth and level headed. Every year on the anniversary of Richard Burtons death, he drove her up to visit his family in Wales, and she happily spent her evenings in their local pub. And unlike some famous people, wasn’t afraid to buy her fair share of drinks. I’d call her a real one of a kind. I met her once, in the late 1970’s in London. I was 17 and just gazed at her in awe.
