How can anyone abandon a cat? This cat kept coming into our garden and I repeatedly shooed him away until I realised he needed water. While he was drinking I got a better look at him and he was clearly in bad shape no fur in many places and thin. We have never had a cat and we thought we didn’t want one so I called the rescue centre and had him taken away. They called me a couple of days later to tell me all the information they had been able to find out about him via his chip and asking around. His owner died so her daughter took him in, then she died too. The remaining relatives denied there was a cat so he was left homeless. He eventually found us several miles away from where he lived before and he’d survived months alone. It broke my heart to hear that so we said bring him back. We were really naive cat people but he had clearly got to us. After lots of trips to vets and a settling in period he now owns the house and we work for him. It was a steep learning curve for us to learn how to care for any animal but we have managed together. I still get emotional thinking about the day we met. I hope I can continue to make up for the cruelty of his old life.
