If a dog changes owner because his human can no longer take care of him (e.g. lack of time, break-up, sickness, radical life change), will the dog miss him and live unhappily for the rest of his life (even if next owner is loving)

We took in a dog who was almost 9 years old because his owner passed away. We didn’t know the owner, he was a friend of a friend. The day I went to meet him, he came running over to me, I said I can see he’s friendly. They just looked at me & said he didn’t do that to any of the other people that were there. It’s like he knew I was there to take him home. I brought him home & he made himself right at home from the start. We had another dog at the time who had been upset since our former dog, a black lab, had passed away. This new dog was a yellow lab & while I can’t say Woody loved Luke, I think he liked the company. And Luke loved Woody. Unfortunately we only had Luke less than 2 years before he passed. Although we had him for the shortest time of all our dogs, he was so special. He knew he was loved and he loved us right back.
