Judge’s unique punishment
There was a 15 year old boy in America who was caught stealing from a store. When he was caught, he broke a shelf of the store while trying to escape from the guard.
The judge heard the crime and asked the boy, “Did you really steal that packet of bread and cheese?”
The boy looked down and replied – Yes.
Judge :- Why?
Boy: I needed it.
Judge :- You should have bought it.
Boy: There was no money.
Judge: You could have taken it from your family.
Boy: – There is only mother in the house. She is ill and unemployed, I stole the bread and cheese for her.
Judge: Don’t you do any work?
Boy:- I used to work in a car wash. I took a day off to take care of my mother, so I was fired.
Judge: Would you have asked someone for help?
Boy: I left home in the morning, went to about fifty people, and at the very end I took this step.
The cross-examination ended, the judge started delivering the verdict, theft and especially the theft of bread is a very shameful crime and we all are responsible for this crime.
“Everyone present in the court… including me, are criminals, therefore every person present here is fined ten dollars. No one will be able to go out of here without paying ten dollars.”
Saying this, the judge took out ten dollars from his pocket and kept them aside and then picked up the pen and started writing:- Apart from this, I impose a fine of one thousand dollars on the store for not treating a hungry child humanely and instead handed him over to the police.
If the fine is not deposited within twenty-four hours, the court will order sealing of the store.
The court wants to apologize to that boy by giving the full amount of the fine to this boy.
After hearing the verdict, not only the people present in the court were in tears, but that boy also started sobbing. The boy was looking at the judge again and again, who walked out hiding his tears.
Are our society, system and courts ready for such a decision?
Chanakya said that “If a hungry person is caught stealing bread, then the people of that country should feel ashamed.”
