On September 11, 2001, Andrea Haberman started her morning with a fun little game she played with her fiancé whenever they were apart. The rule was simple—whoever called first in the morning won. That day, Andrea won.

She took advantage of the time difference and called him early from her desk at the Carr Futures office in the North Tower. She had arrived ahead of her 9:00 a.m. meeting.

About 40 minutes after she hung up, a hijacked plane crashed into the building, just one floor above her. There was no way out.

Months later, workers sifting through the wreckage at Ground Zero found some of Andrea’s personal belongings. Among them was the phone she had used to call her fiancé for the last time.

That phone, along with some of her other items, is now part of the 9/11 Memorial Museum’s collection.
