Today, I was at the dollar store when I saw a sweet older lady in front of me, all dressed up, but she was struggling. She didn’t remember her PIN number at the register. The man behind me kept sighing and saying, “Come on!” while the cashier and I tried to help her. When she was about to leave, she needed help getting her cart out of the door because it had a big pole to stop people from taking the carts outside. I told her I could help, but she said no and looked at the parking lot and her bags.
I insisted, saying, “I’d really love to help.”
She replied, “Oh, I couldn’t. You might not even be parked near me!”
Seriously? As we walked out together, I learned her name was Dixie, she was 83 years old, and had just stopped at the store after church and grocery shopping. She said, “These errands wear my old body out!”
What really broke my heart was when I finished loading her bags into the car, she asked, “How much do I owe you?” I laughed and told her it was no charge, but she said, “No, I must pay you!”
It was so sad that she thought she should pay me just to help her to her car. We must do better. We must be kinder and more proactive, especially toward the elderly. We need to do this for ourselves and for the younger generation, who will grow up in a world where kindness is fading. We can make a difference. Let’s step up, go out of our comfort zones, and be the spark that makes the world a better place.
And hey, invite your friends to join our group so we can spread goodness everywhere. ❤️
