Five Years Ago

I was in a relationship with a man who absolutely despised my dog. He would dump her water bowl, force her to drink from the toilet, and yell at her, claiming it “made him angry.” He would say that no dog was worth anything unless it made money. I finally left the day he tried to kill her and never looked back.

Fast forward five years, and I’m nearing my four-year anniversary with the most incredible boyfriend. When we bought our new home, he didn’t hesitate to welcome the most at-risk dogs facing euthanization, allowing me to foster one and turning our home into a happy household of four dogs. He treats our fosters as if they were his own, picking out custom collars for each one and finding ceramic bowls from thrift stores as part of our tradition. He even bought my oldest dog, the one my ex hated, a ramp to help with her arthritis and is now searching for rugs to make it easier for her to walk on our hard floors.

Being involved in their daily routines—feeding them and getting up at 3 AM to take them out and feed them—has been so rewarding.

What a difference it makes to have someone who truly supports you. 🥰❤️
